If you see me operating this blog in an erratic or dangerous manner, please smile, nod and back your way out of the room slowly.stodmykhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13963038989555835370noreply@blogger.comBlogger225125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7162728.post-64632252686333650562012-03-11T22:50:00.006-07:002012-03-11T22:57:16.566-07:00Thoughts on the demise of the PlayhouseA friend of mine, Kennedy Goodkey, suggested that he's the reason for the death of the Vancouver Playhouse. And you know, he's probably right:

The Truth and the Signal: I am what's wrong with theatre

Still, I can't blame him when there's a perfectly good scapegoat in the federal government. Here's my response:

Dear Kennedy,

You're what's wrong with theatre? I thought I was what's wrong with theatre.

Now I'm just confused.

Okay, seriously. I'm of two minds regarding your idea. Theatre should strive to be simple, and theatre should be familiar - okay, there's nothing wrong with Oklahoma or The Foursome when they're done well. Theatre shouldn't try to challenge audiences, or use obscure source material - you're basically saying the stage (and its accompanying seating area) is no place for one's brain. I could not disagree more.

Just as not all cinemas should be multiplexes dedicated to the latest Bradjelina Cloonhanks vehicles, not all stages should be brainless, hackneyed remounts of Crazy for You.

You've hit part of it - seeing a film costs ten to fifteen bucks a seat, tops, and it's incredibly accessible. Even then, single-screen houses showing good, small-run films have died out too. The throughline here is that anything that makes people think should be revered and supported whether the masses like it or not. If it's up to the masses, do you think The Artist would win Best Picture? Hell, no. Does that make it the wrong choice? NO! The masses are, more often than not, wrong.

Keanu Reeves, massively successful movie star.
Justin Bieber, uber-rich teen idol phenomenon.
American Idol, one of the most-watched TV shows in the world.

Do these things support your "let the market decide" ideology? You're basically saying that the next Tom Stoppard, the next Christopher Plummer -- these people should not have big time theatre as an option in their development. Street busking, TV and the movies are it, is that right?

Fact is, the government has a responsibility to support the arts. Not commercial product. The arts. Painters, songwriters, dancers, singers, musicians, actors, directors, set designers, novelists, poets, screenwriters, playwrights, sculptors, libraries... The creme de la creme who aren't measured on net sales, but rather on merit. They have a duty to build up the cultural fabric of our nation - and yes, this will have a controversial side here: of our nation, not the gajillion foreign nations that people have left behind to come here.

If the Playhouse is going to receive the kind of funding it needs to survive, it should also get support from other public institutions to make sure bums are in seats. I wonder how many MPs and MLAs actually pay for subscriptions to theatres, opera companies and other such organizations, and how many simply take advantage of comps on high profile opening night galas.

Corporate citizens and developers should be required to support local arts - especially if they're foreign-based. They're mining billions from the local economy, they should be required to give back more than just a few perks to the BC Liberals.

The Conservatives have long tried to whittle away at the artistic community. The federal Liberals, and with Jack Layton's folksy charm, were pretty much all that stood between Harper and his dream of a bloodless, artless Canada. Sadly, we no longer have anyone to stand in their way.

If only there were a place that we could put on a show. You know, something cutting and challenging, that could inspire people to reconsider their political and cultural apathy and get things moving in this country again.

If only there were a place.

If only.

stodmykhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13963038989555835370noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7162728.post-60823048458135960252011-10-27T14:23:00.003-07:002011-10-27T14:26:40.464-07:00Seven Things about David Booth

How many of you knew that new Vancouver Canuck acquisition David Booth hunts big game with a frickin' bow and arrow? Well, not ALL the cards - the Hawks still have a pretty good top six in Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Frolik and Stalberg. With the defending champs having traded away their bottom six, however - Byfuglien, Versteeg, Ladd et al were huge parts of last year's Cup win - the Canucks have a decided advantage in the depth department. Siskay is the latest in a long line of NDP candidates to win this seat - however, the margin of victory has been slim over the past few elections. He won in 2008 by a mere 798 votes over the Conservative candidate, Ronald Leung.

Strategic voting: Leung is the only candidate returning for his party in this riding for the 2011 election. Siskay has stepped aside, so the strongest shot at keeping this seat away from the Harper government is a new candidate for the incumbent NDP, Kennedy Stewart (I'm sure Mr Leung is a nice person, but a Harper majority is NOT where I want to see Canada go.) Ken Low is the Liberal candidate, and while his community involvement is admirable, he has little political experience. I line up pretty strongly with the belief system behind the Green Party, and Adrianne Merlo seems like a person I would like to support. Unfortunately, the Greens are politically irrelevant on the national stage, and a left-wing vote split just plays into the Conservative agenda. Sometimes I wish we would alter our system to allow for a separate vote - one for Prime Minister, and one for the local MP.

I guess I'm voting Stewart, and the NDP, in this election.

Kennedy Stewart - NDP

Adrianne Merlo - Green

Ken Low - Liberal

Ronald Leung - Conservative
stodmykhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13963038989555835370noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7162728.post-31485070974849345252011-03-01T08:26:00.003-08:002011-03-01T08:45:25.232-08:00Hockey Songs 3 - I Feel Like Gerry CheeversIt's the third in our series of hockey songs, and perhaps our best bit of musical banter yet. I turn 40 in 22 days. There won't be any navel gazing here, boys and girls - just a thanks to everyone who helped make the past decade the best I've experienced thus far. I'm happier now - more patient, more content, more excited, more passionate than I've ever been.

Since turning 30, I have managed to do the following:

* Convinced a wonderful, fiery Latina to marry me. It's a Premise Movie (TM), like The Matrix, Strange Days or A.I. You need to let yourself buy the idea that 98% of the world's population stays at home and sends forth surrogates -- gorgeous robotic avatars -- into the world to handle nearly every daily task. You plug into this machine with superhuman strength, agility, etc., but you send him/her/it to... work the same shitty workplace you would've gone to without one? Seems the tech hasn't eliminated the need for lousy jobs...

Willing suspension of disbelief and all that. Anyway, this film adaptation may not pack the noirish punch of the gritty graphic novel, but it's a decent popcorn flick that uses Bruce Willis's unique battered and bruised, loose cannon cop routine quite well.

Interesting sidenote: at the end of the film, random couple to our right launched into a debate about the socio-political ramifications of widely available surrogate technology. The belles behind us immediately started talking about the beauty salon / body shop - 'Like, OMG, wouldn't it be awesome to get your cheekbones done like that?'

OMG, indeed, sweetheart. O.
